Ep 87: The Real Definition of Functional Training

What Is Functional Training? The Real Definition of Functional Exercise

What does “functional training” actually mean? And why has the term become so confusing?

In this episode of The Jamin Show, I break down my personal definition of functional exercise and why I believe most people misunderstand it. Instead of flashy movements or trendy gym equipment, functional training comes down to two simple questions:

1. What is the designed function of a body part?

2. How often does real life require that movement?

We'll talk about why squatting and hip hinging (deadlift patterns) may be two of the most important functional movement patterns, how pushing and pulling exercises contribute to overall strength and mobility, and why losing basic movement capacity makes everyday tasks harder than they should be.

I also explain the difference between day-to-day function and anatomical function, and why developing both is important for maintaining strength, mobility, and physical independence as you age.

If you've ever wondered whether your workouts actually translate to real life, this episode will help you rethink how you train, what makes an exercise functional, and why it matters for your long-term health and fitness.
